Great question. Could be a long answer. But we'll try to make it short and simple.

We love sales reps - and there are some really great ones out there. In fact, we have many in our arsenal. But solely relying on sales reps is not a good idea. This is because good sales reps need management and serious, devoted time. The most productive and successful reps have the behind the scenes support so they can provide quick, accurate responses to questions, competitive price quotes, and appropriately-geared programs for their customers.

It is also important that we point out that you don't want your reps to carry your line; you want them to sell your line. And if you have new products or services, then there is a heightened need for intense training and closer management of your reps. Is your company and product going to get the representation it needs and deserves?  And are you going to be able to provide your reps with the tools they truly need? They must be equipped to sell, must be reminded to sell, and while they are selling they must feel comfortable that they can get the answers they need.

Sales is the only activity that creates revenues for your company, so you have to be 100% sure that each piece in your sales engine is running smoothly and receiving regular maintenance. Ahh, what comes first, the chicken or the egg question. We believe that there is no right or wrong answer to this, and that it is really dependent upon the goals for your company and the product(s) in question.

But, if you can go out and sell your product first (even if directly to consumers), then take this course of action. It does help to validate the market before approaching investors. Solicit feedback and learn from this feedback, and then approach some investors or funding options to market the product and take it to the next level.  

The answer is both yes and no. We'd love to hear about your ideas, yes. And we have heard about some really great ideas along our way.  However, despite what we all could wish and hope for, ideas do not generate revenue.  Converting ideas into tangible reality - now that's more like it!

There are some phenomenal resources out there that can help you proceed with the steps needed to convert your idea to reality. Consider checking into Inventor and Entrepreneur Clubs in your area, Check out SCORE, and the SBDC (http://www.sba.gov/localresources/index.html) to start with. And then if you proceed to the next steps and wish to commercialize your product, then that's when ESM can help your efforts greatly. The number one rule: DO YOUR HOMEWORK. If you are conversing with a company that is promising you sweet success and riches, ask them how many of their clients made more money from their product than they invested with the particular firm. We'd love to hear the answers you receive. Remember that once a dishonest company has your money, you'll likely never get it back.

Many companies who have launched new products have been disappointed in the sales results because they failed to understand the process for commercializing new products...we have to give you credit for trying. And it is likely that you yourself have tried to sell your product to save costs, but ask yourself: have you really saved cost or have you lost revenue?
